When Mozart was a toddler, Nanneri was his idol. As soon as he saw his sister studying piano, Mozart knew that he was destined to become a pianist and composer. Both Mozart children (Wolfgang and Nanneri) were very close, and they invented a secret language and an imaginary kingdom of which they were king and queen.
When Nanneri was seven, she began keyboard lessons with her father while her three-year-old brother looked on. Wolfgang often spent much time at the piano, and figured out how to play different intervals and which keys sounded good together. At four years old, Wolfgang's dad began teaching him clavier. He could play pieces perfectly and some how sounded like a master pianist, even though he was only a little boy. Also, little Wolfgang loved to compose his own music, but didn't know how to write it down so his father had to carefully notate the music Mozart would play.
Nanneri also continued to play the piano, but when she became a young woman her parents forced her to end her career, even though she could have been very successful. They thought it was not appropriate for a woman to be a pianist and wanted her to get married instead even though Nanneri wanted to play the piano forever.
In contrast to her brother Mozart, who quarreled with their father and eventually disobeyed his wishes with respect to career path and choice of spouse, Nanneri always obeyed her father, even when she didn’t agree with him. She fell in love with a soldier named Franz, but was forced by her father to turn down his marriage proposal. Wolfgang attempted, in vain, to get Marianne to stand up for her own preference.[2]
